The opening night of the 18th edition of SONICA brings an exhibition that echoes this year's theme, Celestial Shelters.
Perfect Blue is a sonic and visual installation, developed as a continuation of Martin Bricelj Baraga's award-winning Cyanometer* project — itself an homage to Horace Bénédict de Saussure's pioneering instrument for measuring the blueness of the sky as an indicator of air pollution. The tool is a simple watercolor wheel of 53 shades of blue, against which to measure the blueness of the sky and air quality.
In collaboration with sound artist Éric Raynaud, 53 vinyl records were pressed from this data, each holding a sonification of one shade — its blueness, its atmosphere, its quality of air. Each record carries two sides of sky: one side sonifies data from Ljubljana, the other from Geneva, the two cities where the Cyanometer installation lives. Placed across the gallery walls, this sonic archive invites visitors to select, combine and set the records in conversation, drawing out endless, ever-shifting sound atmospheres from the invisible transformations of the sky.
The Cyanometer by Martin Bricelj Baraga is a monument to the blueness of the sky. It is inspired by the original cyanometer invented by Horace-Bénédict de Saussure in 1789. The Cyanometer is both a monument and software that periodically collects images of the sky.
